Stallion Licences and Premiums

When the UK Ministry of Agriculture decided to cease stallion licensing in 1983 the Cleveland Bay Horse Society started its Premium Stallion Scheme to encourage the use of the best stallions and to enforce higher veterinary standards. The breed's most coveted award for stallions is the King George V Cup, annually competed for by the ten Premium Stallions. In addition all young stallions are inspected before they go to stud and at intervals throughout their lifetime to ensure that only the soundest are kept for breeding.
